How we look after your data

Last updated 18 August 2026

This site is a short fundraising campaign — the 4 Cafés Challenge, in aid of Guhyaloka for the Ages. We keep things simple, and that goes for your data too. This page explains what we collect if you sign up for episode alerts, why, and what your rights are.

Who we are

The London Buddhist Centre (registered charity in England & Wales, no. 255420; 51 Roman Road, London E2 0HU) is the data controller — that is, the organisation responsible for your data. The 4 Cafés Challenge is a volunteer fundraising project run with the LBC’s support.

Questions about this notice or your data: contact@lbc.org.uk.

What we collect, and why

If you use the “Don’t miss an episode” form, we collect:

That’s all. We don’t ask for your name, and we don’t track what you do on this website. (The donation form is run separately by Beacon on the LBC’s behalf — see “Donations” below.)

What we send you

An email each time a new episode of the 4 Cafés Challenge goes live — roughly once a week for six weeks — and possibly a final thank-you with the total raised. We won’t use your address for anything else unless you separately agree to it.

Our lawful basis: your consent

We only email you because you asked us to: entering your address and pressing “Email me each episode” is your consent, and we keep a record of when you did it. You can withdraw consent at any time — see “Unsubscribing”.

Where your data is stored

The list is held in Mailchimp (Intuit Inc.), which sends the emails on our behalf. Mailchimp is based in the United States; the transfer is covered by the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework (the “UK–US data bridge”) and Mailchimp’s standard contractual terms. Mailchimp acts on our instructions only and does not use your address for its own purposes. You can read Mailchimp’s privacy statement.

The website itself is hosted by Vercel. When you submit the sign-up form your address passes through Vercel’s servers on its way to Mailchimp; it isn’t stored there.

Who we share it with

Nobody, beyond Mailchimp as our email provider. We never sell or swap mailing lists.

How long we keep it

Until the end of the campaign plus a short wind-down — we’ll delete the episode-alert list within three months of the final episode, unless you’ve separately chosen to keep hearing from the LBC. If you unsubscribe before then, Mailchimp keeps a minimal “do not email” record so we don’t accidentally email you again.

Unsubscribing

Every email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom — one click and you’re off the list. Or email contact@lbc.org.uk and we’ll remove you.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us to: tell you what data we hold about you; correct it; delete it; restrict or object to how we use it; or give it to you in a portable format. Just email contact@lbc.org.uk. If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your data you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk — though we’d appreciate the chance to put it right first.

Donations

Donations are taken through the LBC’s Beacon donation form embedded on this site. Anything you enter there (name, payment details, Gift Aid declaration) goes to Beacon and the LBC, not to the episode-alert list, and is covered by the London Buddhist Centre’s privacy policy (linked from their website). Payment details are handled by Beacon’s PCI-compliant payment provider and never touch this website.

Cookies and embedded content

This site sets no cookies of its own and uses no analytics. The trailer and episodes are embedded from YouTube using its privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com), which doesn’t set cookies until you press play. The Beacon donation widget and Google Fonts load from their own servers and may set their own technical cookies; see their privacy notices for details.

In short: you give us your email, we send you about six episode emails and a thank-you, you can leave any time, and then we delete the list.

Changes to this notice

If we change anything material we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
